Etna
Painting by Thomas Cole from 1842
Reference page: Repertory of Cults and Myths
Etna was a nymph whose name later became that of the volcano we all know. When Hephaestus and Demeter found themselves contending for possession of Sicily, it was Etna that intervened as mediator of the dispute.
According to a local tradition, Etna was the mother of the Palici born from the union with the god Adrano; even if, after the Hellenization of the myth, the paternity of the Palici was attributed to Hephaestus, the god of the volcanoes.
