Neolithic village of Stentinello

 

Traces of a Neolithic village subjected to archaeological constraints.

Stentinello Location near Syracuse. From a Neolithic station found here it takes the name of the culture of S. a culture widespread in eastern Sicily in the 5th millennium BC and characterized by villages of huts at ground level, surrounded by protective trenches, having in the inner margin surrounded by dry stone walls . There are siliceous or obsidian blades, arrowheads and ceramics belonging to various categories. The thick-walled one decorated by impression is typical, with vertical distribution of generally geometric elements. (Source text Encyclopedia Treccani) 

Situated on a rocky terrace overlooking the largely eroded sea, the village consisted of a set of rectangular huts, of which the holes of the poles intended to support the elevation remain in the rock, and surrounded by a trench reinforced by an agger of stones. The trench yielded a large quantity of clay and lithic finds: fragments of impressed pottery and flint and obsidian knives. L 'Orsi, following the excavation of the village of
Stentinello identified the Sicilian Neolithic with impressed ceramics which he called the Culture of Stentinello. It is part of the wider cultural horizon of the Neolithic ceramic (Source text Regione Sicilia)
