Cultural Heritage Interpreter: Reference scheme

The reference scheme is based on the 'modelSkills Cycle' and is in line with the 'Tourism, Arts, Heritage Competence Framework (TAH-CF)'. the TAH-CF is defined in accordance with the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), the Recommendation of the European Parliament and of the Council 2009/C 155/02 (ECVET) and the APNR (Non-Regulated Professional Activities) scheme adopted by UNI for the technical standardization of unregulated professions.”

Description

PPC14: Cultural Heritage Interpreter (EQF Level VII)

The Heritage Interpreter is a professional figure with a high intellectual content who has specific skills to carry out activities of:

  • Conception, Design, Implementation, Participation, Communication, Implementation, Evaluation, Improvement and Innovation inherent to Interpretative Services (mediated interpretation) and to the paths of Interpretation Experiences (direct interpretation).
  • Identification, Cataloging, Knowledge, Interpretation, Documentation, Conservation, Protection, Enhancement, inherent to the Cultural Heritage

The Heritage Interpreter has a deep knowledge of his own territory and of the cultural heritage in its various forms from the material one (historical-artistic cultural heritage, landscape and natural heritage) to the intangible one (tradition, folklore, art, food and wine, typical crafts, local history and traditions) in order to identify and arrange, in a systemic way, both interpretative services and unique paths of cultural interpretation experiences. The Cultural Heritage interpreter also adopts a systemic approach that highlights, during the entire interpretative path, typical aspects of experiential learning: motivation, interpersonal relationships, multi-sensoriality, local identities, centrality and uniqueness of the participants and originality of the participants. tools used.

Note:

  • Interpretation services (mediated interpretation): Creation of communication tools and services (signs, signage, maps, illustrative brochures, guides, flyers, multimedia productions and stations, installations, websites, apps, etc.) and design of Interpretation Paths and Local Development Plans based on Interpretation
  • Interpretation Experience Paths (direct interpretation): Initiatives that provide for the direct participation of both interpreters and guests in the interpretative activities.

In order to take into account the different specializations operating in the interpreting sector and the correct assignment of skills, knowledge and competence, four specialist profiles are taken into consideration for the purpose of exercising the profession of Cultural Heritage Interpreter:

  • PPC14/P1: Interpreter of the Archaeological Heritage 
  • PPC14/P2: Interpreter of the Historic-Artistic Heritage 
  • PPC14/P3: Interpreter of the demo-ethno-anthropological heritage  
  • PPC14/P4: Interpreter of Environmental Heritage 

Note:

  1. The difference between the various forms of Cultural Heritage Interpretation is exclusively linked to the degree of sectoral specialization and to the tools used during the entire interpretation process, as each Interpreter must in any case have a solid knowledge and skills in all sectors. Therefore, there will be no distinct professionalism but a single professionalism (Interpreter of Cultural Heritage) specialized in one or more sectors that have relevance to Cultural Heritage in the broadest sense of the term.
  2. The professional who has the preparation to carry out the activities associated with at least one of the five profiles indicated is considered Cultural Heritage Interpreter.
  3. A Cultural Heritage Interpreter works in one or more of the areas indicated.

The Heritage Interpreter can be an employee or a self-employed person who provides his/her services to specialized Centres, Museums, Ecomuseums, Local Authorities, Cultural Associations, Organizations managing Cultural Heritage. Its activity can take place both indoors (classrooms, laboratories, museums and ecomuseums), and outdoors in direct contact with places of interest for carrying out the experience of cultural interpretation.

In order to take into account, in the assignment of tasks, the following distinction was made:

  • Optional tasks: additional tasks to the core that are at the discretion of the individual practitioner

Profile Evaluation Criteria

For the attestation of the possession of the requisites of competences, abilities and knowledge related to the profession it is proposed to take into consideration methodologies that take into account the following aspects in a way that are not mutually exclusive, i.e. possibly in combination with each other:

  • Qualifications issued in the academic field (Formal Learning)
  • Specific training (Non-formal learning)
  • Work or professional experience (Informal learning)

 

Requirements for access to the professional figure 

Since the professional figure is not organized in an order or college, the requirements may vary based on the relevant Professional Association or other criteria established by the individual interested parties. Below are the requirements adopted by AIPTOC - Italian Association of Tourism Professionals and Cultural Operators.

  • Have attended specific training courses for the professional figure in question organized/recognized by Universities, Regions or Professional Associations established pursuant to Law 4/2013 and recognized by the MISE and at least six months, even non-continuous, of proven work or professional experience in the capacity of Interpreter of Cultural Heritage.

Or

  • Be included in the Registers of Professional Associations established pursuant to Law 4/2013 and recognized by the MISE provided that they refer to the professional figure in question and have obtained Quality Certification and Professional Qualification pursuant to Law 4/2013

Or

  • Degree in: Natural, Environmental Sciences or equivalent, Geological Sciences, Education and Communication Sciences, History, Archaeology, Modern Literature with an educational focus and at least two years, even non-continuous, of proven work or professional experience as an Interpreter of Cultural Heritage

Or

  • At least 3 years of proven work or professional experience as a Cultural Heritage Interpreter and having passed a specific exam aimed at assessing the knowledge, skills and competences required by this standard.
