Tonnara of Portopalo
The tonnara of Portopalo, like that of Marzamemi, was a tuna trap of return.
The fishing right from which the current tonnara originates dates back to the medieval period, granted as a feudal barony subject to investiture, vassalage and the obligation to equip an armed horse every twenty ounces of income.
The owners had to give the business to merchants, who were interested because they had the possibility of obtaining substantial earnings with very few financial commitments.
In 1774 the property passed to the prince of Villadorata Corradino Nicolaci, who modernized the plant and invested in new equipment both mobile and fixed.
In the 800s it was deactivated for a period and then rearmed in 1895 by Don Pietro Bruno Belmonte. The tonnara was "lowered" on an annual basis until 1969.
