Tonnara of Avola
La Tonnara di Fiume di Noto or Avola, located on the coast of Marina di Avola, was originally located near the stream of the same name, today identifiable as the Asinaro River. Initially rented by the Nicolaci family, in the seventeenth century it was managed by Count La Massa and in 1655 it passed to Simone Calascibetta, at the time the owner of other important plants such as those of Marzamemi and Vendicari. It was damaged by the earthquake that hit the Val di Noto in 1693, so much so that in the eighteenth century the Tornabenes, new managers, carried out important restoration works, also integrating a small church and a noble palace. In the following decades it passed to different owners; although it was known for its good results, like the other Sicilian plants it suffered the crisis of the twentieth century, ending its activity in the fifties. Today the skeletons of some structures of the complex remain of the tonnara which, a few meters from the sea, is often subject to storm surges which further damage the buildings already in poor condition.
