Description

Archaeological site of C.da Cellaro Cavaliere / Risinata

The site covers a large hilly area used as a forest reserve: in the north-western part we note the presence of ceramic fragments referable to a chronological period between the second century. BC and the seventh century. AD (achromatic pottery, fragments of oil lamps from the late Republican age; Italic terra sigata; African terra sigata; African cooking pottery; fragments of amphorae and tiles) and the remains of wall structures and large blocks of sandstone (some squared off). In the extreme eastern part there are the well-preserved remains of an artisan plant consisting of
a complex system of tanks connected by channels, probably from the late ancient period. In the central-northern part, however, where there is a rocky ridge oriented in a north-west / south-east direction, there is a necropolis with cave tombs, some of which are
distinguished by the presence of an antechamber and the remains of the access dromos. Furthermore, on the shores of Orange Lake is the Islamic fort of Mazallakkar (930 AD).
