Palazzo degli Studi

Modica-Palazzo-de-studies

Corso Umberto n. 172 The Palazzo degli Studi (1610 - 1630) was actually the Convent of the Jesuit Fathers, who from the time they settled in the building made it the College where they could educate the offspring of the aristocracy of Modica. The College, built by expanding and restoring a building donated to the Municipality by the Palermo nobleman Alliata, was annexed to the Church of SS. Gesù e Maria, or of the Collegio (today S. Maria del Soccorso), whose baroque façade was rebuilt in 1714 based on a project by Rosario Gagliardi, while the Convent, resisting the earthquake of 1693, determined the choice of the Jesuits and the Modican people of do not move the city to the neighboring highlands. The entire building was built by the will of Countess Vittoria Colonna de Cabrera, who promoted the arrival of the Jesuits in Modica, and contributed financially, together with the Municipality and the owners of the time, to which in the capital of the County they instituted courses of study of university level.
