Description

Bonagia Palace

Via Alloro 48
Unfortunately it is in a state of ruin, nevertheless it is considered one of the most remarkable expressions of eighteenth-century civil architecture in Palermo.
In the eighteenth century Antonino Stella, Duke of Casteldimirto, proceeded to renovate and expand his fifteenth-century building, located between the palace of the Monroy, princes of Pandolfina and the no longer existing church of Santa Barbara la Soprana. The façade was built on a project by Nicolò Palma (1750). The staircase was built by Andrea Giganti (around 1755). And it is precisely the pincer staircase in red marble from Castellammare del Golfo that is considered a masterpiece, for its refined constructive and scenographic solutions. Currently the building is in a state of disrepair, as it was damaged by bombs during the Second World War and was the subject, until 1985, of a whole series of interventions which, instead of aiming for its restoration, led to its partial demolition. Only in recent years has the Municipality of Palermo made it safe and its destination as a suggestive open-air theater space.

Property bound pursuant to Legislative Decree 42/2004. (17/11/2013)
