Mosaic Garden of Giarratana

The Mosaic Garden is the district in the south of the town of Giarratana where in 1989 a Roman villa dating back to the III century was discovered. D. C, with floor mosaics. The planimetric development of the building complex is about two thousand square meters, with at least three pavilions regularly arranged around a central space. The building is monumental due to the architectural layout of the building structures, the floor mosaics and the findings of sculptures. The wall structures are built with double parameters with robust lava stone from Mount Lauro and in the area of the villa two sculptures have been recovered: a head depicting a female figure, and a marble relief depicting Hermes and Aphrodite. The first excavation campaigns in the villa, carried out in 1989, 1990, 1996 and 2000, brought to light the north-eastern sector of the building consisting of seven rooms, a corridor or a peristyle, the east and west pavilions, added later to the original plant e probably never completed. It was possible to ascertain geometric mosaic floors.
