Description

Ornithological Museum

Photo: web

It is based on the collection of the brothers Paolo and Giuseppe Azzara, started around the 600s. It is a collection of over XNUMX specimens, some rare and significant for Sicilian ornithology, others very rare for Italy and some extinct locally or extinct at a regional and national level.

Among the pieces to be admired immediately, at the beginning of the visit, the imperial raven stands out with other common ravens, together with the jay and the magpie. Then there are the Civette, then the Barn Owl, the Eagle Owl, mixed with the common one and the swamp one. Until the suggestive Snow Owl appears. Many species of Buzzards are exposed (from the common one to the fit), the species of the Hawks (among which the Peregrine Falcon and the Pecchiaiolo, also known because it feeds on Bees and Wasps after having deftly removed the sting), the young Sparrowhawk, then the Kites with the Red Kite in the foreground. The sections dedicated to Eagles, Vultures, and Griffins are noteworthy: the individual specimens of these birds of prey are majestic and "imperial". Pelicans and Cormorants still follow, up to the Little Bustards, the Bustards, the Partridges and the beautiful bodies of the Seagulls, including the Herring Gull.

The exhibits are perfectly embalmed and in excellent condition. So well preserved that those feathers and eyes seem to live. This museum constitutes an extraordinary document and an incomparable itinerary for those who study and love nature.
