Description

Maritime Activities Museum (Tonnara dell'Uzzo)

The Museum of Marine Activities, housed in an ancient marfaring, is the first museum you come across from the North entrance of the Zingaro Nature Reserve; in the tuna traps, this was the name given to the complex of buildings intended for processing the tuna, for storing the tools used for fishing and for housing the fishermen who worked seasonally on the fixed nets.
The former factory today houses the historical evidence of this activity with ancient roots.
On display, nets and pots, used for slaughter, and photographic images that illustrate how bluefin tuna fishing was a ritual and an honor, but also a duty and survival, certainly the oldest method developed in the whole Sicilia. A massive fishing that involved the entire seafaring community.
