Description

Monte Pellegrino - Cave of the Speziaria (Grotta del Mussuni)

“The cave is located at the beginning of the Favorita park, inside the military powder magazine, at the foot of the southern edge of Primo Pizzo, it follows the Grotta dell'Acqua by about fifty meters. The Speziaria, unlike the
previous, is not accessible for a limestone quarry that was opened right at its feet, changing the slope into a steep vertical wall of over twenty meters and which caused the landslide of the anthropic deposit of the cave,
that atmospheric agents slowly erode causing it to fall to the ground. It was not possible for me to examine the entire contents of the deposit which had slipped on the quarry floor which would have deepened my knowledge on the use of the cave; I only ascertained the presence of flint and obsidian. The presence of the latter, usually absent in Palermo since the strip of deposits capable of containing it have been dismantled for a long time, gives good hope that intact Paleolithic sediments may be encountered in the probable future excavations.".
