Movie plot:

Immediately after the liberation of Sicily, Salvatore Giuliano, already outlawed for killing a carabiniere, forms a gang and becomes part of the separatist army, sustaining firefights with soldiers and carabinieri. When this army is disbanded, Giuliano is isolated with his gang and is forced to resume his outlaw activity. One of the most serious facts of this activity is the episode of Portella della Ginestra, in which numerous men, women and children were killed by the gang. At this point a war without quarter against Giuliano is decided by the authorities. One after the other they yield the cornerstones of his defense and on the morning of 5 July 1950 his inanimate body is found in the courtyard of a house in Castel Vetrano. But the story is not over. Gaspare Pisciotta is poisoned in prison and other mafiosi who have committed crimes with him are struck by mysterious hands.
