The Madonnina del Porto

LOCATION Entrance to the Port of Messina, on the extreme arm of the sickle. DATING 1934 DESCRIPTION: It is placed on the tower placed on the extreme tip of the port crescent of the San Salvatore Fort. It consists of a 35 meter high column, in reinforced concrete covered in Trapani stone, with an octagonal plan and decreasing section, surmounted by a 3 meter globe on which the blessing statue of the Madonna is placed (7 meters high), the work of the sculptor Tore Calabrò. The lights of the statue were turned on directly by Pope Pius XI, from Castelgandolfo, with a radio control developed by Guglielmo Marconi.
