The Magician Tartagna
Variant of “Lu spunsaliziu di 'na Riggina c'un latru.” XXI
A king promises his daughter by banishment to anyone who will jump a ditch ten palms wide; a Tartagna Wizard skips it, who therefore gets it. He takes her with him to his palace closed with seven bronze doors; there he wraps it around himself and holds it tight with his tail, which he has very long. After seven years, the poor woman can let her father know about her sad case, with a letter that she entrusts to a swallow, with the warning that to save her seven brothers are needed, who have a singular virtue to one of hers. The brothers find each other and go to
free it: the 1st opens the bronze door without making any noise; the 2nd unwinds and slightly releases the girl from the magician's tail: (this young man took the eggs from her hen without her hearing him); the 3rd he puts her inside a bronze tower and runs like the wind. Once the dragon or magician wakes up, he chases the fugitives, but the others create obstacles and setbacks for him by throwing a mountain of chickpeas, flints, soap, etc. to the ground and making them appear. The dragon begs that they want him to see his bride for the last time;
and it shows a finger and dies. The 7th of the brothers blows a whistle and revives her; and the magician turns back in despair. Once they reach the Court, the one who brought her bride takes her as his wife, with the consent of her brothers. To take revenge, the magician has a silver statue of St. Antoninus built, locks himself inside, and has it sold to the Court. There he goes out at night, and because under the queen's bedside there is a note from him with which she has bewitched her, he, unintentionally, manages to take her from her bed to go and boil her in a cauldron of oil prepared by him . The note falls: she wakes up; shout help! the servants come running, and the Tartagna Wizard is lowered into the boiling oil
