The Godfather Part I (1972)
In 1969 the first novel was published, The Godfather. The Godfather: Part II (1974)
After the success of the first chapter, Paramount decided to immediately produce the sequel, putting the direction back in the hands of Francis Ford Coppola. Al Pacino this time became the protagonist of the film, while the whole cast was reconfirmed. A young Robert De Niro was cast to play Vito Corleone as a young man in his rise to power, which runs parallel to Michael's story. James Caan returned to play Santino in a flashback of Michael, while Marlon Brando also refused to take part in a cameo for reasons related to the compensation for the first film. The production budget this time was much higher than that of the first chapter. The proceeds, on the other hand, were lower than the predecessor, but were still quite satisfactory: between 40 and 50 million dollars. Lee Strasberg, Al Pacino's teacher at the Actor's Studio, was chosen for the role of the main enemy.
The Godfather: Part III (1990)
In 1989 Francis Ford Coppola found himself in a serious financial crisis, caused by the failure of some of his previous films, and this was the reason that convinced him to accept Paramount's request to make the third film in the saga, despite having previously stated that it would end with the second chapter. In addition to Coppola, Mario Puzo was reconfirmed for the screenplay, while Carmine Coppola, the director's father, arrived for the music.
Al Pacino was reconfirmed in the role of Michael, and like him also Diane Keaton and Talia Shire returned to their respective roles, while Robert Duvall, initially foreseen in the script, refused to return for reasons related to compensation. In his place came Andy García who plays Sonny's illegitimate son, Michael's brother, who will also become the new godfather at the end of the film. Also joining the cast were Sofia Coppola, daughter of the director, and Franc D'Ambrosio, both in the role of their respective children of Michael. This last chapter is more focused on the mafia's relations with the Catholic Church and politics. Compared to the first two films The Godfather - Part III it received less critical acclaim, but was nonetheless a box office success, grossing $ 136,7 million worldwide.
