Description

Mouth of the Carboj/C.da Bertolino di Mare

The site involves a flat area on the right of the mouth of the Carboj river, affected by highly concentrated fragments. It is an almost rectangular band, bounded to the south by the right bank of the river and to the west by the coastline, separated from the beach by a grove of umbrella pines. On the surface of the ground fragments of ceramics from the Hellenistic and Roman periods have been found; in particular Greek black-glazed pottery, pottery of the Hellenistic-Roman period for common use and for fire, Italian terra sigillata, African terra sigillata from production D, tiles and transport amphorae from the Roman period. Furthermore, there is an abundant presence of stones and just rough-hewn calcarenite blocks, probably pertaining to masonry structures that are now lost. The density of the fragments is lower in the northeastern part of the area and increases as one proceeds towards the river bank. Considering the position of the site, it could be hypothesized that it was perhaps the site of a residential settlement

Greek Hellenistic / Roman Age - IV century. BC-V sec. A.D
