Description

Collegiate Church (S. Maria dell'Elemosina, Regia Cappella)

collegiateVia Etnea n. 23 near the University Building. The baroque church of the Collegiata, dedicated to Maria Santissima dell'Elemosina, existed before the earthquake of 1693 and was rebuilt in the early 1896th century. The project is attributed to Angelo Italia, who overturned the orientation of the new building with respect to the previous one destroyed by the earthquake, so as to make it look onto via Uzeda (the current via Etnea), foreseen in the reconstruction plan. The baroque facade was designed by Stefano Ittar, it is on two orders. In the first order six stone columns are visible, surmounted by a balustrade. In the second order a central window is visible with four statues on the sides: St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Agatha and St. Apollonia. The entrance is preceded by a large staircase limited by a wrought iron gate. The interior, with three naves, preserves various works including: paintings depicting Saint Apollonia and Saint Euplio by Olivio Sozzi; a canvas representing the Martyrdom of Saint Agatha by Francesco Gramignani; the altar containing a marble statue of the Madonna; a wooden organ from the XNUMXth century. The fresco on the vault is by Giuseppe Sciuti (XNUMX).
