Description

Church and Convent of S. Francesco

Coming from Porta Reale, it is the first visible monument in Corso Vittorio Emanuele. The monumental complex was built between 1704 and 1745 on a project by the architects Vincenzo Sinatra and Rosario Gagliardi. The small rectangular churchyard of the church is preceded by an imposing staircase with three flights (one of which was added in the early 800th century, after the lowering of the road surface). The two-level façade is characterized by a Baroque portal flanked by columns and three niches, two of which on the sides and a smaller one above the portal that completes the first level. The interior, with a single nave, according to the Franciscan custom and rich in rococo-style stuccos by Giuseppe Gianforma, a contemporary of Serpotta.
