Description

Church of St. Nicholas

The original layout dates back to 536 when Belisario had it built as a Greek rite church dedicated to the Ascension. The Chiaramente family modified and restored it in the 1749th century and had the chapel of San Nicola built. In the XNUMXth century it became a parish. The current appearance dates back to XNUMX with an intervention attributed to the architect GB Amico. The plan is a Latin cross, divided into three naves by pillars with deep chapels on the sides. The roof is barrel vaulted with lunettes. Inside several valuable works: a sixteenth-century marble triptych depicting Christ between Saints Peter and Nicholas, perhaps by Vincenzo Gagini, a Crucifixion made by Andrea Tipa, Il San Nicola by Giacomo Tartaglia, the bust of the parish priest A. Fardella by Andrea Tipa, a sculptor group in wood, canvas and glue, depicting Christ between the two thieves, a product of Trapani artistic craftsmanship. (Source: Municipality of Trapani)
