Description

Church of S. Giovanni dei Napolitani

Corner of Piazza Marina and Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Erected in the XNUMXth century and completely restored in the XNUMXth century.
The plan of the new church is in the Sicilian medieval tradition, with three short naves and a front porch. Inside, the naves are divided by round arches on marble columns. Construction was completed in 1617.
Inside, the white and gilded stucco decoration, the work of Procopio Serpotta, is a typical example of an 1761th century remodeling. Still in stucco, by the same author, we find in the right side aisle two statues depicting justice and charity, in the left aisle two other statues depict virginity and grace. The transept still retains the original polychrome marble flooring. In the right aisle, there is a funerary monument (made by Emmanuele Gabriele in 1690) of Don Tommaso Trabucco (1761-XNUMX), who was rector of the Confraternity, buried in the family tomb inside the same church at the foot of the side altar of the right aisle.
From 1925 it passed into the hands of the Confraternity of Charity, which rented it to the Superintendence of the Galleries and Works of Art of Sicily which used it as a deposit attached to the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis. It has recently been reopened for worship and entrusted to the Order of the Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem
