Description

Church of SS. Annunziata

On the Via Roma on a small square stands the Church of the SS. Annunziata, certainly from the sixteenth century, however, nothing connects us to the older church, because there have been many transformations in past centuries, as evidenced by the various dates carved on the tympanum of the window (1635) or on the bell tower (1718). The main portal, polychrome made of lava stone and red marble, surmounted by an “artareddu” with the Annunciation carved inside is interesting.
The interior of the church was frescoed, today only a small section remains, a frame of flowers. In the apse the main altar rises, dominated by an artistic organ in the Gothic style, around which the choir turns. The pipe organ, the oldest in the town, built by Sebastiano Calcerano Platania, a native of Acireale, in 1877. The Presbytery is closed by an artistic marble balustrade.
Of considerable artistic value are the two sculptural groups, both attributed to the Neapolitan modeller of the eighteenth century, Gennaro Franzese. The first group of two statues of exquisite workmanship in painted tablet depicts the Annunciation. Above the group stands an elegant dome supported by angels. The second group, also in painted pastille, represents the Virgin Hodegetria, to whom the church was previously dedicated. The Virgin is represented enthroned on a chest, supported by two Basilian monks and an angel.
In the Church of the Annunziata you can admire the first VIA CRUCIS, by the artist Salvatore Incorpora (1900-2010), thin but deep, made in the sixties.
