Description

Contrada Montagnoli

The site extends over two hills of tuffaceous nature that rise along the course of the Belice river at approx. 4 Km from its mouth. The remains of an indigenous settlement are preserved on the flat summit and near the steep walls. In particular, the main nucleus of the town is located on the eastern hill where, following archaeological excavations conducted by the Superintendency BB.CC.AA. In Agrigento, the remains of circular huts have been brought to light. Furthermore, on the south-western side of the hill there are substantial remains of the city walls and the monumental access gate.
The dominant position was certainly fundamental for the layout of the site, chronologically ascribable between the eighth and seventh centuries. BC, which certainly served as a military control post on the Belice river. The life of the settlement is attested until the fourth century. BC and traces of a presence in the Middle Ages are documented by the presence of glazed ceramics and arcosolium tombs on the slopes overlooking the Cocchino stream.
