The protagonist of this novel is Didì, a sixteen-year-old girl, who is faced with a sudden transition from adolescence to adulthood, represented precisely by the long dress. Didì is traveling with her father and her brother, Cocò, to Zùnica, a town far from Palermo where her father worked. From a dream place in Didì's childhood, Zùnica had turned into a nightmare place for her, as she is on her way to marry a forty-five-year-old man you've never seen before. (Source: Wikipedia)

The story tells of how the death of her mother, which took place three years earlier, influenced the lives of the family, and especially that of Didì, who from that moment on remains alone, more emotionally than physically. Even when the father and brother are at home, in fact, it is as if they were there only with the body and not with the heart and mind. Didì is totally frightened by the future she is entitled to and she sees so much sadness in adulthood, also thinking about the end of her of her friend Rorò Campi, who died immediately after entering adulthood. During her journey, Didì's two companions fall asleep with her, making her feel more alone than she already felt. She still feels like the child that her mother made her feel and she cannot accept that future, so, attracted by the "poison" that her father always carries with her for her illness, she decides to take him, thus arriving died in Zùnica
