Description

Fountain of the Malavoglia

Sculptural group located in Piazza Giovanni Verga, created by Carmelo Mendola, a sculptor from Catania (1895-1976) from 1956 to 1975. The subject of the work is the dramatic scene of the shipwreck of the "Provvidenza", the ship of the Malavoglias in the homonymous and novel of Verga of 1881. The tension between the grieving bodies, but at the same time in full action, is faithful to what Verga describes in the corresponding passage of the novel
