Church Maria SS. Immaculate
It was probably built in 1175.
Originally it had to be so narrow that, to allow for a greater capacity to accommodate the faithful, the expansion works began in 1798 and were completed in 1828. A few years later, in 1836, the brothers Pietro and Felice Zito, from Burgitas, created the internal stuccos.
The statue of Our Lady of Sorrows is kept in the church and is paraded in procession on Good Friday. Maria SS. Immacolata, or Motta The origins of the Church can be traced back to an ancient memory according to which a Saracen general named Motte lived near the church; following his conversion to Christianity he had an oratory built inside which there was a chapel with the image of a Madonna inside.
According to legend, the faithful knelt down as they passed in front of her because the Madonna was miraculous; the miracle happened when a knight, passing in front of the image, didn't kneel down but his horse, as if to reproach him, did it for him.
This increased popular devotion and, in the XNUMXth century, the chapel was replaced by a real church dedicated to the Madonna della Motta.
