Description

Church of the Madonna del Carmelo

Already existing in the barony of Tavi, it was enlarged and restored in 1661 by Nicolò Placido Branciforti. In 1785 it was rebuilt in the forms that we admire today by the Fathers of the Third Order of St. Francis and the interior was only completed in 1899 by the will of the Sac. F. Scelfo. The adjoining convent remained in use until 1857 until it fell into ruin. Inside, protected by a small metal grate, a stone is kept which according to tradition was deposited by an infector in the stoup to spread the contagion of the plague. But a miracle of the Madonna del Carmelo prevented the contagion and so Leonforte was saved from the terrible scourge.
