Cathedral of Ragusa: 4 Chapel of Maria SS. Sorrows

This chapel is characterized by the sumptuous gilded stucco decoration and by the sublime altarpiece, depicting theSorrows, painted by the brothers Giuseppe and Francesco Vaccaro from Caltagirone in 1862. It is a painting still full of Baroque reminiscences and qualitatively very high, where a strong emotional intensity predominates which is particularly tangible on the face of the Virgin Mary, a mother pierced by immense pain and left alone at the foot of the cross to share the sufferings of her son who had just been crucified. Her agony is only mitigated by her total trust in God's plan.

The desolate and arid depiction of Golgotha, sadly immersed in a darkened atmosphere, contrasts with the warm light that arrives from above and contributes, together with the pain shown by the crowd of cherubs, to accentuate the drama that is taking place. On the Paliotto of the altar the marble revival of the Virgin of Sorrows.
