1767 – Vito D'Anna – The Immaculate Conception

Vito D'Anna was asked in 1767 to create a canvas with the Immaculate Conception (oil on canvas, 320 by 222 centimetres). The work sees Mary, above a crescent in the clouds, in the center of her, dressed in a white dress and a blue cloak which, when shaken by the wind, forms a wave. She has her hands crossed on her chest, her eyes lowered due to her modesty.

An angel, with his back turned to the left, dressed in a green robe and a brown cloak, looks at her in amazement. A white-skinned putto, with a lily in his hand, is placed at her feet on her right, while groups of cherubs and seraphim surround her both above in the sky illuminated by a divine light and below. Particular and natural attitude of Mary's body above her head, surrounded by a halo of twelve stars, stands the dove of the Holy Spirit with spread wings.

For its creation the painter will receive 30 onze, paid by the Camerlengo of the Distinguished Collegiate Church of San Giorgio, Canon Spadola
