Villa Romana del Casale

In December 1997, during the 21st annual meeting of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, which took place in Naples in Italy (1-6 December), the named site was added:  "Roman villa of the farmhouse"

 Short description of the site

The agricultural exploitation of the countryside during the Roman period is symbolized by the villa, the true fulcrum of a large estate on which the rural economy of the Western Empire was based. The Roman villa del Casale is one of the most luxurious examples of this monumental architecture. Its uniqueness is due, in particular, to the richness and quality of the mosaics that decorate almost every corner, the most beautiful , throughout the Roman world.

The criteria adopted by Unesco for the inscription of the site in the World Heritage Site:

The Committee decided to enter the area on the basis of criteria (i) (ii) (iii) considering that the Villa del Casale in Piazza Armerina is a sublime example of a luxurious Roman villa, which graphically illustrates the prevalence of social and economic of his time. The mosaics that decorate it are exceptional for their artistic quality and the novelty of the breadth. The Committee asked that the State party draw up a report on the conservation and management of the place and in particular ask for a monitoring of the climatic conditions in the structures that protect it and their impact on the archaeological finds.
