Villino Florio (Viale Reg. Margherita)
Description

Villino Florio (Viale Reg. Margherita)

Viale Regina Margherita, 38. XIX century. In Art Nouveau style. The villa, nestled in a splendid garden now surrounded by high-rise new buildings, was commissioned by the wealthy Florio family to the architect Ernesto Basile and built between 1899 and 1902. It is one of the first Art Nouveau architectural works in Italy and it is considered one of the masterpieces of Art Nouveau also at a European level. Being Vincenzo Florio a man of cosmopolitan attitude and very dedicated to travel, Basile in this work seems to want to recreate all the stages touched by the rich bourgeois by inserting various elements into the structure, as part of an itinerary: curved baroque surfaces, typically Nordic trusses , cylindrical turrets that refer to French castles, Romanesque columns and Renaissance ashlar are all elements wisely mixed to create a masterpiece of eclecticism and originality. After the golden age of the family, the cottage fell into disuse until the fire of 1962 which damaged part of the interior.
