Description

Village-Necropolis-Sanctuary of Cozzo Busonè

The site involves an elongated limestone hillock in a north-west / south-east direction with a summit at an altitude of 312 m asl.On the sides of the hill there are the remains of a prehistoric necropolis with numerous oven tombs dating back to the initial phase of copper and the early Bronze Age period; vases from the culture of S. Cono-Piano Notaro have been found in the tombs. The whole hill is characterized by the presence of natural ravines and artificial cuts that testify to the frequentation of the site. In this area two Venuses were found, that is, two pebbles representing a naked female divinity that suggest religious and cultural connections between Sicily and other centers of the Mediterranean. Scholars therefore hypothesize the existence, on the slopes and on the central-western and southern slopes of the hill, of buildings
of cult of prehistoric age. On the site there are also attestations referable to the Iron Age (ceramic of S. Angelo Muxaro). Eneolithic / Ancient Bronze - III-I millennium BC
