Description

Villa Arena

Via Luigi Vanvitelli, no. 54.

In 1568 Pietro Tudisco bought, from the Pia Opera di Navarro, a vast agricultural estate located in the “Pozzo Comune” district of the Petrazzi (Cruillas), which also included a small mound defended by a 600th century tower. In the second half of the seventeenth century the property passed from the Tudiscus to the Abbot Giovanni Faja who in 1724 sold it to the Giureconsulto Girolamo Arena Judge of the Grand Court. After 1724 G. Arena began the construction of the current villa, in which in 1749 he will locate a chapel dedicated to S. Francesco di Paola. After the death of Girolamo Arena, the construction of the villa was continued by his son Giuseppe, also a magistrate. Subsequently the estate with the villa passed to the son-in-law Carlo Mortillaro Asmundo Barone del Ciantro Soprano. The villa, never completed in the external scores, had the illustrious architect Sac as director of works in 1749. Nicolò Palma. The large façade of the villa is connected to the large courtyard by an imposing pincer staircase.

Maria Felice Mortillaro marquise of Villarena and owner of the homonymous villa near the hamlet of Cruillas married to the baron Antonino Petyx of Casteltermini (AG) in 1896. After his death, his wife bequeathed the villa to her husband who died one night in 1935. Baron Antonino Petyx joined the ranks of Catholic Action at a very young age around 1902, driven by an irrepressible need to give himself to the works of mercy, he founded numerous assistance centers for the less fortunate. Some of these were: Cloakroom and Kitchens for the Poor, Educational Library, etc ... In 1966 the Cause of Beatification was announced by the Curia of Palermo. Today, after almost 50 years, everything is still standing… The same villa, where the Servant of God lived, is in conditions of extreme decay, testifying to the abandonment that has lasted for many years.
