Cape Rama Tower

Cape Rama Tower

The tower is among the oldest in existence with a circular plan, with a typology similar to those of Capo Mongerbino, Torre del Rotolo, Torre di Mondello, and Torre di Isola delle Femmine known as inside (mainland), and was probably built in 1405 at the time of the king of Sicily Martin the younger.

It is the oldest building existing in the municipal area of Terrasini and is included in all the official lists of the towers that made up the complex and articulated coastal sighting system. The Capo Rama tower was part of the 11 towers controlled by the Senate of the City of Palermo, of which it represented the westernmost branch.

It is mentioned by Fazello in 1558, while Tiburzio Spannocchi in 1578 recommended redoing the paving of the attic since there were water infiltrations in the underlying environment. From one of his watercolors it is clearly visible that the tower had a wooden ladder as a means of access, which was simply supported, and that a signal pole stood on the paved roof.

In 1584 Camillo Camilliani reports that the tower, being of an old design, could not support the artillery of that time, but at the same time he recognized its usefulness: … for the correspondence of signals .

In 1594, and then again in 1596, the tower is mentioned in the documents of the Deputation of the Kingdom of Sicily, both for various repair costs and because it was decided to increase the personnel of the garrison from two to three towers .

In 1714 Castellalfero reports that: …chief Rama is watched from a round tower, equipped with an iron cannon and guarded by three men on guard…

Finally, it was mentioned by the Marquis of Villabianca in 1797, while in 1867 it was included among the military works to be decommissioned.

Currently it has no use and is in mediocre condition even after the safety measures carried out by the Superintendency of the BB.CC.AA. of Palermo, by the architect Lina Bellanca both in 2004 and in 2005 which blocked its complete ruin
