 The Tonnara

La Tonnara of San Giuliano or Trapani Palace, located on Punta Tipa, has its origins dating back to the mid-fifteenth century. In the following centuries it saw the succession of various owners, such as the Fardellas, the Borgheses, the Serrainos and the Tipas. The latter used the factory for the conservation of fish products. On the Punta, there was also space for a small church dedicated to San Giuliano and a watchtower. A slow and progressive deterioration of the buildings, now practically ruins, motivated the birth of a new factory: the Tonnara of San Cusumano, in the hamlet of Casa Santa. In the early years of the twentieth century, this plant took over the fishing rights of the previous establishment, effectively taking over the activity which was definitively closed in the sixties. In the seventies the entrepreneur from Trapani Nino Castiglione, already owner of the San Cusumano plant, bought those of San Giuliano and nearby Bonagia, thus bringing them together in a single corporate form called "Tonnare di Bonagia and Sancusumano", today Nino Castiglione Srl, carrying out the slaughter until 2003. The plant today mainly deals with the transformation of the fish, treating tuna, but also mackerel, anchovies and sardines.
