Cofano tuna trap tower
The tower, built between 1556 and 1560, has a four-pointed star-shaped square plan and represents, with its concave walls, a unique layout for Sicily.
No direct communication was possible with the nearby Tower of San Giovanni, on the opposite side of Mount Cofano
The tower was acquired by the regional state in May 2006. Restored with funds from the European Community, it was reopened to the public in April 2010.
The building is a truncated pyramid with a starry quadrangular plan, with four concave sides, entirely built in limestone.
The ground floor has a single room with a square plan and a barrel vault, on the floor of which there is the opening of a cistern dug into the rock. A staircase to the left of the entrance allows access to the upper level, which is also square in plan, with a thin partition that divides the space into two rooms of different sizes. A steep ladder leads to a trap door open on the barrel vault, which leads to the roof.
