Rotolo Tower
Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo, n. 1624.
La Tower of Fra Giovanni o Rotolo Tower o of the Ruotolo it is located on Punta Rotolo, between Addaura and Vergine Maria, on Lungomare Cristoforo Colombo n. 1624 in the locality of Vergine Maria, a seaside village of Palermo.
It was built at the behest of the royal court in the first decades of the fifteenth century.[1] It was one of the "short distance" coastal watchtowers together with the Capo Zafferano tower, the Prickly pear tower, the Punta di Priola tower, the Tonnara di Vergine Maria tower and the Tonnara di Mondello tower.
Today it is owned by the metropolitan city of Palermo.
The Rotolo tower is a primitive and inefficient tower: with a slender structure and small dimensions, not very suitable for supporting artillery, it was also devoid of a tank for collecting drinking water, making it difficult to resist enemy attacks. The subsequent Torre della Tonnara di Mondello, experimenting with a more rational architectural model, marked a turning point in the Palermo coastal defensive system. (Source: wikipedia)
