Tower of the Barresi-Branciforte Castle - Militello in Val di Catania

The first news about the castle dates back to the Norman period, and since then it has witnessed events now shrouded in legend. In 1354 a meeting of the Sicilian parliament was held there. Queen Bianca of Navarre, widow of King Martin in 1410, found hospitality there in her tormented escape from the Great Executioner of the Kingdom Bernardo Cabrera. And it was here that the drama of Aldonza Santapau took place in 1473, killed by her husband Antonio Piero Barresi because she was suspected of infidelity. Enlarged and enriched by the Branciforte, who also made it a place of culture and science, the imposing building, which had a quadrangular shape and towers at the corners, did not resist the seismic shocks of 1693.
