Tonnara of San Giorgio
Description

Tonnara of San Giorgio

located on the eastern side of the territory of Gioiosa Marea, they can be traced as early as the 1407th century by identifying the activity among the possessions of the Benedictine monastery of Patti. In 1571 Berengario Orioles, Prince of San Piero Patti, obtained the fishing concession in the stretch of sea between the Saliceto valley and Punta Fetente as a reward for his services to the Crown. After a period of inactivity in 1973 it was bought by Cesare Mariano. Tuna fishing thus initiated the birth of the seaside village of San Giorgio in the mid-eighteenth century. Meanwhile, the structure passed into the management of various families including the D'Amicos and finally the Cumbos who dedicated themselves with great energy to the transformation and sale of tuna in oil. The tonnara lost its function in XNUMX; sold to private individuals, it was largely demolished and its space is now occupied by a newly built residence leaning against the few remaining ruins.
