Byzantine tombs of Zighidì
Description

Byzantine tombs of Zighidì

Byzantine tombs.

Other interesting archaeological sites are scattered around the island and represent burial grounds dug into the rock, was of an irregular quadrangular or anthropoid shape. They can be associated with the Byzantine occupation of the island and are all datable to a period ranging from the 13th to the XNUMXth century AD. The largest of these burial grounds is in Contrada Zighidí and served the underlying town of Contrada Monastero. But the most striking are the Ghibbiúna tombs, in Serraglia above Ghirlanda. The tombs are obtained from the stones of a small promontory enclosed in a forest of holm oaks. A silent, almost magical place, in which to take a break and become intoxicated by the scents carried by the wind. (Text source: http://www.parconazionalepantelleria.it/pagina.php?id=XNUMX)
