Timpa of Acireale (ITA070004)

Site type: SAC Special Conservation Area

Code: ITA070004 - Hectares: 236

Description:

This area includes a coastal stretch of the northern Ionian side of Etna. It is made up of lava rocks from various periods with a maximum altitude of
about 200 m. The bioclimate is part of the lower thermo-Mediterranean with an upper subhumid shadow type. It is a predominantly rocky territory directly
influenced by marine factors. The thermophilic scrub of Euphorbia dendroides is quite widespread here, covering the most exposed rocky ridges, while the surfaces
more protected, they have strips of deciduous woods with Quercus virgiliana. Well represented are the perennial grasslands at Hyparrhenia hirta and the sub-halophilic aspects at
Crithmum maritimum that colonizes the sea cliffs.
4.2Quality and importance
It is a tectonic area of regional importance with plant formations of significant naturalistic value, in a strongly anthropized and
urbanized. The importance of the site, despite its high degree of anthropization and its relative degradation, derives from representing the wooded strip more than
low altitude on the eastern side of Etna. It represents a remnant of the now mythical Bosco di Aci, which it still covered at the beginning of the 800th century, in the opinion of
RECOVERY (1815), a large strip of the eastern side of Etna. These strips currently represent the only natural areas where one has been preserved
portion of the much richer and more articulated woodland fauna of the Etnean foothills and represent refuge sites for numerous species of Vertebrates that
otherwise they would have already disappeared from the whole area. It still retains a significant fraction of the invertebrate fauna of the Etna foothills
with numerous endemics and rare and very localized species. The strategic importance of the site for the protection of biodiversity is therefore completely evident.
