Acireale Thermal Baths (Santa Venera)
Description

Acireale Thermal Baths (Santa Venera)

According to tradition, the ancient Greeks had already built the baths located in what is now known as the archaeological area of Santa Venera al Pozzo. The baths were subsequently enlarged by the Romans and exploited by the Byzantines, until the arrival of the Arabs and then abandoned after the earthquake of 1169. The current Baths of Acireale, were inaugurated known as Terme di S. Venera, were inaugurated in 1876 by the Baron Agostino Pennini of Floristella who wanted the entrance in a neoclassical style. The Baths were also equipped with a park and a sumptuous hotel, the "Gran Hotel des Bains". Over the years, several structural changes have taken place until 1987, when the more modern and well-equipped Thermal Complex came into operation in the nearby hamlet of S. Caterina. Thanks to the thermal baths Acireale became a spa of a certain notoriety and hosted some important personalities such as Richard Wagner and his family (1882), King Umberto I and Queen Margherita (1881).

The baths exploit the same sulphurous, salsobromoiodic and radioactive water used by the Roman baths, through a captation system. They are very effective in the treatment of osteoarticular, rheumatic and dermatological diseases.
