Description

Garibaldi Theatre

Piazza Ruggero Settimo. Built in 1877 to a design by Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda. The last embellishment works were carried out in 1891 on the occasion of the great National Exhibition that was held that year in Palermo. In 2000 the restoration of the polychrome Pompeian decorations of the loggias was carried out. Since 2001 the theater has been the seat of the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra. The work proposes symmetries with exhibition conciseness in synergy with neoclassical balances characteristic of the Napoleonic Triumphal Arches, with bronze groups of rampant horses placed at the entrance of the building. Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda was inspired by the models of academic classicism in vogue at the end of the nineteenth century. The entrance consists of a triumphal arch surmounted by the bronze quadriga of Apollo, the work of Mario Rutelli, flanked by a pair of bronze horses by Benedetto Civiletti
