Description

Cielo D'Alcamo Theater

Among the numerous civil and church monuments of Alcamo, there is the first "Ferrigno" Municipal Theater, which built in the mid-nineteenth century, was a cultural container of considerable artistic and historical interest, with paintings by Palermo Salvatore Nasta and stuccos by Filippo Rimi from Alcamo.

This theater hosted very noble and well-established theatrical companies, so much so that it became a cultural reference point also for the neighboring municipalities.

In 1957 the Municipal Administration, in agreement with the manager Girolamo Ferrigno, since the theater was in need of restoration and consolidation, decided to tear it down.

In 1961, on the area of the old theater, the new one was inaugurated which, dedicated to the mythological Euro wind, appeared without the stuccoes that decorated the boxes and frescoes, but larger and able to compete with the theaters of large centers, for functionality and good taste. 314 wooden armchairs were placed in the gallery and 494 comfortable seats in the stalls.

Subsequently, in 2001, the theater was renovated and renamed "Teatro Cielo d'Alcamo", in honor of the great thirteenth-century poet Cielo or Ciullo d'Alcamo, original singer of the Italian language. (Source: Municipality of Alcamo)
