Teatrino - Caltagirone

theater

The Teatrino is located in Via Roma (the ancient Via Carolina), on the eastern side of the Public Garden. It was built in 1792, based on a design by Natale Bonaiuto, on the slope of a panoramic hill. The structure is divided into various orders and floors communicating with seats and terraces decorated with polychrome majolica provided by local potters Ignazio Campoccia and Angelo Mirasole. The terminal part, consisting of three arches, serves as the entrance to the National Ceramics Museum. In 1862 the terminal part collapsed during the restoration works and the restoration was completed only in the twentieth century. The style with which the Teatrino is decorated was used for the decoration of the Public Garden which connects the theater to the south door of the Villa. Contrary to the Tondo Vecchio which looks towards the Valle di Ponente, the Teatrino looks towards the Valle di Levante.
