Cork of Contrada Serradaino
Site type: SAC - Special Conservation Area
Code: ITA020038 - Hectares: 341
Description:
The site is located on the northern coast of Sicily, falling within the territory of Pollina (province of Palermo), where it extends for about 328 hectares. The biotope includes the interesting forest nuclei that from the coastal strip, on the edge of the state road 113, cover the slopes downstream of the town, affecting the Contrade Serradaino, S. Maria, Costa S. Gallo, up to Serra di Pietra. The area culminates in the crests of Cozzo Minneria (314 m) and Cozzo Serradaino (552 m), characterized by a geological structure dominated by silico-arenaceous formations consisting mainly of sedimentary rocks, such as quartzarenites and brown pelites, distributed in layers, according to the classical organization of the Numidian flysch; in the valley floor, on the other hand, alluvial deposits alternate. From the bioclimatic point of view, the territory is included in the thermomediterranean (average annual temperature of> 16 ° C) and mesomediterranean (temperature = 13-16 ° C), with a sub-humid-humid shadow type (average annual rainfall of 600-800 mm). The vegetal landscape is predominantly dominated by more or less degraded cork forests, sometimes alternating with nuclei of deciduous oak forests, as well as cultural aspects, consisting mainly of olive groves and ash trees.
It is a biotope of considerable flora and fauna, phytocenotic and landscape interest. The forest formations dominated by Quercus suber and deciduous oaks are particularly interesting and extensive. The area also has considerable wildlife interest, due to the presence of a rich zoocoenosis including rare and / or threatened species
