Stilla d'oru and Stilla Diana

Variant of “Li figghi di lu cavuliciddaru” XXXVI

A prince married the daughter of a rich peasant: and as she was about to give birth, he left her to go to war. After she gave birth to her, he gave birth to two girls: Stilla d'oru and Stilla Diana. The mother-in-law let her son know that two little dogs had been born to him instead of two children: whereupon he ordered their death. The old queen sent them to be thrown into the sea. Her box was collected by a woman who supported her two children until they were seven years old, when they abandoned her wife because they got into arguments with her children. They were admitted to a country house, where a woman took them in and cared for them as her children for years and years. When the King returned from the war he brought out the unfortunate wife who had been so slandered by her mother-in-law.
