Description

Archaeological site in Campolato Nord

Name

Prehistoric cave reused in the Byzantine age; station in a cave and shelter under the rock used in the upper Paleolithic, the Neolithic and in the Greek and Roman age; area where Stentinellian Neolithic pottery was found. (A2.1)

Description

A cave station and a rock shelter had been identified along the coast, presumably used in the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods. The Superintendency of Syracuse carried out an excavation campaign there in 1992 under the direction of L. Guzzardi, ascertaining frequentation of the area in the early Bronze Age and in the Greek and Roman age. Outside the caves, on the surface, Neolithic ceramic fragments of Stentinellian facies have been recovered. An inspection carried out by the Superintendency of Syracuse in 2003 indicated, about 250 m of the two caves mentioned, another cave of natural origin partially closed by a wall of sandstone blocks; in the ground in front of it, fragments of prehistoric lithic and ceramic industry were collected, referable to the Byzantine and early medieval age.
