Archaeological site in Calogero - Maldicente
Denomination
Ancient Bronze Age settlement and necropolis.
Description
On the rocky wall of the limestone plateau, six tombs with artificial caves have been identified, all with a circular plan and a flat roof, in some cases preceded by an anteroom, with the façade flattened or highlighted by a large frame, from the Ancient Bronze Age. On the plateau above the
necropolis, some holes for poles related to a prehistoric settlement have been found. The materials collected in the plateau (lava stone millstones, flint fragments, ceramic fragments both achromatic and with brown decorations on a reddish background), pertinent to the facies of Castelluccio,
they relate to an Ancient Bronze Age settlement, to which the nearby necropolis is to be referred. In the locality of Castelluccio S. Calogero, not better identified, four eneolithic vases with strong calcareous encrustations were found, probably from a karst environment, perhaps a burial in a cave.
