Archaeological site of Monte Sole
Description

Archaeological site of Monte Sole

Monte Sole, at 161 mt. asl, it is the highest peak of the Licata Mountain; it dominates the sea, the hinterland and the plain of Licata. On its top there are substantial remains of fortifications, consisting of an imposing boundary wall that delimits the north, south and west side and of which traces remain
of large square blocks. It is a "frourion" from the Greek era. Also on the top, on the north-east side, emerges a space dug into the rock whose two remaining walls are about 3,50 meters high and seem to have remains of battlements at the apex. Some stairways carved into the rock lead to a room made of pebbles in the shape of a horseshoe. Two other rooms dug into the rock are found in the lateral part of the aforementioned room, and others are found on the northern slopes and in the southern area of the plateau. On this there are two wells and a large cave. On the south-east side of the mountain there are six cave tombs with rectangular opening and recessed with respect to the surface of the rocky wall. Bronze / Archaic Greek Age - XNUMXnd-XNUMXth century BC / VIII-VI century. B.C
